Frequently Asked Questions

Is NIOS equivalent to CBSE?

Yes. NIOS certificates are recognised by COBSE and all Indian universities as equivalent to CBSE, ICSE, and state board qualifications. Government jobs, competitive exams, and university admissions all accept NIOS certificates.

Who can apply for NIOS?

There is no minimum age for NIOS Secondary (Class 10). For Senior Secondary (Class 12), the minimum age is 15 years. There is no upper age limit for either programme. Students who dropped out, failed board exams, or need a flexible schedule are all eligible.

How many attempts does NIOS allow?

NIOS allows 9 attempts across 5 years from the date of registration to pass all required subjects. Subjects you have already passed are permanently credited — you only re-appear for failed subjects.

What is the On Demand Examination (ODE)?

ODE lets you appear for selected subjects throughout the year instead of waiting for the fixed exam window. You register on the NIOS portal, choose a date at a nearby exam centre, and receive your result within 30 days.
